If you follow me on Instagram, like you should be doing if you’re reading this blog, you’ll notice that the last few photos I’ve been posting have mentioned the localnomads.la photowalk. Also if you read my last post, I shared some of the photos from the photowalk as well. And if you haven’t figured it out yet (especially from the title) this blog is going to be all about my experience at the, you guessed it, localnomads photowalk. Let’s dive in.
What is a PhotoWalk?
I guess before we go any further I should explain to you what exactly a photowalk is. Essentially, it’s when a group of photographers and models meet up at a predetermined location, hang out, network, walk around and take photos. It’s an opportunity to meet new people and get some practice taking photos. It’s completely free, low pressure, and there no obligations. Think of it as a semi put together club of creatives who want to work with other creatives in a low pressure environment.
Who are the Local Nomads?
That’s a great question. The real answer is, the group that comes together and meets up. However, if you follow the page, you’ll notice that it’s run by mostly @hipstagog AKA David Gasc. David explained that the original group exists elsewhere, and that this is a louisiana chapter created by locals in the area. He also explained that once models joined the group and they teamed up with @modelsoflouisiana that the group began to grow.
Why Should You Go On a PhotoWalk
The answer is simple. If you want to get to know some local photographers and models, then a photowalk is the perfect opportunity to do that. When speaking to some of the participants, some people were there to practice modeling, other to practice taking photos of people, others to get some good work for a portfolio. Some people were there just to hang out and have fun and explore the city. Personally, I went to take some photos of models and get to know some of the local photographers. Since then, we’ve been supporting each other on Instagram and encouraging one another. It’s helped me get a little more visibility and establish a personable connection. It was awesome to meet the people behind the instagram names like @modelsoflouisiana @memok3 and @hipstagog.
Overall, I had a blast and met so many amazing people. Everyone was super nice and is ultra supportive. It’s a great way to meet and collaborate with local people. It’s a great way to meet new friends. The @localnomads.la photowalk was everything I wanted it to be and more. I can’t wait until the next one.
